Stephanie Lanter
Summer Resident Artist, 2017
Hometown: Emporia, Kansas
Stephanie Lanter is an artist and educator working in clay, fiber, mixed media and words. Her sculptures and installations explore the myriad ways in which technologies complicate and distort modern interpersonal communication and connection. Evoking the process of handwriting, in her sculptural work she layers lines of liquid clay in a manner that begins as being meditative and balanced, but which invites distortion and dissonance. Her installations draw on the imagery of mobile messaging and invite viewers to participate by adding handwritten text messages, ultimately creating an open dialogue.
Stephanie earned an MFA from Ohio University in 2002, and a BA from Xavier University in Ohio, in 1998. She is currently the Assistant Professor of ceramics at Emporia State University in Kansas. She has completed residencies at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, and Mendocino Arts Center in California. In 2004, Stephanie was the Jentel Critic at the Archie Bray Foundation and returns this summer as a 2017 Windgate Scholar.
