Shane Harris
Past Summer Resident
Hometown: Springfield, Illinois
Shane Harris describes his work as an illustration of the emotions that are evoked by human interactions, such as passion, love, loneliness, sadness, desire, adoration and joy. He uses a small scale to represent not only physical intimacy but emotional intimacy as well, ultimately provoking a psychological response in the viewer. These responses may range from sensuality to feelings of intimacy. Similar to the impact of looking at a photo album, which can evoke memories and feelings, viewing the arrangement of Shane’s abstract objects arranged in an intimate picture can trigger an emotional response.
Shane currently teaches Ceramics and Sculpture as an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at The University of Illinois Springfield. He first studied ceramics while earning his Associate of Arts degree at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL. Shane received his MFA in ceramics from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 2007, and earned two BFAs from the University of Illinois, one in ceramics in 2003 and another in sculpture in 2004.
