Shae Bishop
Summer Resident Artist, 2017
Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky
Shae Bishop feels a deep connection with pattern, which he uses to explore the complex relationships between different types of making. Referencing both textiles and architectural structures — through which humans build a physical language of pattern around themselves — Shae constructs sculptures that link small ceramic tiles together using fibers. By making the rigid flexible, his use of the media denies their expected tactile and functional natures, creating a conversation that spans multiple craft traditions.
Shae earned his BFA in ceramics and art history from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2012. While there, he studied abroad at the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet in Hungary. Shae has completed residencies at the Babayan Culture House in Turkey and Red Star Studios in Kansas City. Shae is joining the Bray as the 2017 Sage Scholar.
